Male Hair  Loss Pattern

As there are different types of hair and varying growth cycles and the conditions affecting the patients so there are different types of hair fall or hair loss pattern. It is not necessary that two person suffering from hair loss are victim of similar problem that has led to the condition. Therefore, skilled hair loss treatment surgeons, doctors or experts focus on thorough diagnosis of the patient and only then they determine the hair loss pattern and treat the patients accordingly.

Male Pattern Baldness

Out of all men who are suffering from hair loss or baldness, most of them, to a tune of around 98% can be said to suffer from a common pattern of hair loss which is also known as male pattern hair loss or male pattern baldness. Male Pattern Hair Loss (MPHL) is very common. About 40% of men in the age group of 40 to 50 years are affected with this condition. However, teenagers have also been reported to suffer from this condition, but they realize the problem only when it is too late.

In general the loss of hair starts from sidelines of the forehead and continue to spread in form of thinning of the hair over the crown and finally crown patch becomes visible. If not checked the thinning of the hair spreads to other areas of the scalp and results in complete baldness. Male Pattern Hair Loss also describes the condition of a progressive thinning, or miniaturization, of scalp hair. The Norwood Scale can be used to categorize hair loss patterns in men. Male pattern hair loss is divided into 7 categories and sub-categories.

In comparison to women, it has been proven that men suffer more from the condition of baldness. The main reason for this is presence of high level of Di Hydro Testosterone (DHT) hormone in men. An increased level of DHT is widely accepted as the cause of miniaturization of hair follicle. Men who are genetically susceptible to MPHL have increased levels of Type II 5 alpha-reductase, an enzyme that converts testosterone into DHT; thereby, making them vulnerable to pattern hair loss with an increased level of DHT.

Androgenic Alopecia in Male

Male pattern hair loss is also known as Androgenetic Alopecia. The nomenclature of the condition takes care of the fact that male pattern baldness is genetically carried and is influenced by hormone called Androgen. It is also known to male pattern hair loss treatment doctors that this condition has almost little to do with any other factors that are commonly blamed to cause or result in irreparable hair fall or hair loss.

However, each and every person has DHT and other hormones that are blamed for hair loss or male pattern baldness, but not each and every man suffer from hair loss. Only those people suffer from MPHL, those who have high level of Type II 5 Alpha enzymes. As these enzymes creates an imbalance of DHT by converting simple Testosterone to more potent DHT. Over time, the increased level of DHT causes a gradual miniaturization and finally the death of affected hair follicles.
